Sony overtaken the e-book competition

Sony has time left. Almost a year ago, since the Japanese Group's e-book reader Reader PRS-505 presented. At that time, however, the device only on the American market, English Bookworms remained sidelined. This should now be over. At the IFA in Berlin showed the Sony Reader is the first time in England and promised the device later this year, too.

It could also its competitors Sony Amazon überrunden whose e-book reader Kindle in the U.S. seem to sell well. In England, Kindle but not yet available, a planned sales begin not yet known.

With the touch a printed book, the Sony Reader, despite the Leather bands little in common. Blame, especially the low weight of 260 grams and the low thickness of less than one centimeter. With dimensions book has little to do but is more portable and also verstaubar better than paper books.

16,000 books in the shirt pocket

That is also the great advantage of the Reader: Even the built-in memory, according to Sony fit about 160 digital books. If not, can the space with SD cards or Memory Sticks. Around 16,000 books can, for example, on a 16-gigabyte memory stick with you.

But this is hardly anyone using it. It is reasonable for such additional storage volume, for example, PDF files to use the memory consume far more than electronic books. Or you can fill the memory card with music in MP3 or AAC format. This allows you to read even relaxing music.

But then, the battery relatively quickly running out. Without music, it is sufficient electricity supply to 6800 times the page umzublättern. Converted would also enough to all the Harry Potter books and then read through a few Swedish detective to browse, in between without it. And that is also more so because Sony no charger in the box. To rebuild the battery, the reader must therefore either by USB to a PC or the optional anstöpseln charger buy.

Without light is nothing

Such Leseorgien can deal with the reader also quite expect, because the screen with the so-called E-Ink technology works, works completely differently than conventional screens. Instead of the image such as the television 50 times per second rebuild, it is only once. Then the display consumes no more electricity, provides an absolutely flimmer and streifenfreies picture, the equally quiet acts like printed paper.

Only one drawback has the technology: Because the display has no own lighting, it works in the sun best. On the evening in bed Schmökern you needed is still a bedside lamp.

But before it is served in such a digital reader can enjoy comfortable, you need first of all content, say electronic books. But in England it is still bad. After the device understands some formats, which is also without online shops can be habhaft. The Adobe PDF format is one example. But texts, as in Word or RTF format, can be.

When will the England E-Book Shop?

True fun to read but only if electronic books in a special e-book format reads. The fact is the Sony device reformat flexible, so that the texts, for example, any increase. The texts will be automatically re-wrapped so that you can not scroll left and right, but the text remains completely on the screen.

In the U.S., Sony sold those e-books through its online store connect. When a similar offer in England will want to Sony's managers in Berlin have not betrayed. However, at least so much they could imply, wanted to do this at the Frankfurt Book Fair in mid-October, announced.

You do not need much imagination to auszumalen that Sony probably about this event will use not only the reader even in the trade, but also fits a English offshoot of its online e-book shops to install. It remains to be seen just how Amazon will react and whether perhaps the Kindle its launch in Europe will make Frankfurt. Competition is good for business.
